One of the plates in Merian's 1705 Suriname series traces the life cycle of a butterfly across a passionflower vine, from egg and caterpillar through chrysalis to adult, all rendered on the same page. That composition, an insect and its host plant shown together through every stage of transformation, was Merian's signature contribution to natural history illustration. This print, part of the same series, likely follows the same structure with another insect and plant pairing native to the colony.

The colors are richer in person than they look on a screen. Everything that makes Surinam Insects and Plants special survived the reproduction. I already have my eye on a second one.
The colors are richer in person than they look on a screen. The clarity of Surinam Insects and Plants makes it look like the original was photographed yesterday. Highly recommended if you are hesitating… 😍
This is the second thing I have bought here and both have been good. Everything I like about Surinam Insects and Plants is here and legible. It has me wanting to redo the rest of the upstairs hallway to match. It has handled the dry air in Denver better than most things we own. Good value even at full price.
This was packed carefully and showed up without a mark on it. The smaller elements of Surinam Insects and Plants are clear enough to reward a close look. Nearly perfect, and I am not complaining.
It looks like something out of a museum shop, in the best possible way. The clarity of Surinam Insects and Plants makes it look like the original was photographed yesterday. The color accuracy is the best I have seen from an online order. The packing was almost comical in how careful it was. Ten out of ten from me.
Really glad it worked out. Thanks for writing something this specific, it helps other people decide. Best, Ines
