One of the plates in Merian's 1705 Suriname series traces the life cycle of a butterfly across a passionflower vine, from egg and caterpillar through chrysalis to adult, all rendered on the same page. That composition, an insect and its host plant shown together through every stage of transformation, was Merian's signature contribution to natural history illustration. This print, part of the same series, likely follows the same structure with another insect and plant pairing native to the colony.
