The Suriname plates range widely in subject, including leafcutter ants stripping a guava plant and, on one particularly striking sheet, a large spider preying on a hummingbird. Merian recorded this variety firsthand during her 1699-1701 expedition, observing insects in gardens, forests, and plantations rather than working only from specimens shipped back to Europe. This plate, from the same series, likely shows a comparable pairing of a Surinamese insect with its plant.
