Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) returned several times to the biblical tale of Susanna, the virtuous young wife surprised at her bath by two elders who threaten to slander her unless she yields. Rubens paints the moment of alarm with all his Baroque richness of flesh and drama — beauty and menace held in a single tense instant.

I bought this to fill an awkward corner and it did much more than that. Every line in Susanna is crisp, even in the busiest areas. It makes the upstairs hallway feel like somebody with taste lives here. I already have my eye on a second one.
