Japanese painter Tawaraya Sōtatsu depicts the monk Niaoge, whose name literally translates as Bird's Nest, in this early-1600s hanging scroll. Niaoge was a Zen practitioner said to have lived in the isolation of treetops, dispensing wisdom to those who sought him out below. Sōtatsu rendered him using the boneless ink technique, building form from layered washes rather than outlines, a hallmark of the artist's style. The scroll draws on a 1602 Chinese book of legendary Buddhist and Daoist sages.
