The Blue Passion Flower — Antique Botanical Print

The blue passion flower (Passiflora caerulea) is a vigorous climbing vine native to South America, prized for its intricate, star-shaped blooms with a fringed corona banded in blue, white, and purple, followed by egg-sized orange fruit. Spanish and Portuguese missionaries who encountered the plant in the Americas in the 16th century read its unusual floral parts as symbols of Christ's Passion, the corona as the crown of thorns, the five anthers as the five wounds, and the three stigmas as the nails of the crucifixion, which gave the flower its common name. Today it is the national flower of Paraguay and one of the hardiest, most widely grown passionflowers in temperate gardens.
