Founded by the apothecary-turned-botanist William Curtis in 1787 under its original name, “The Botanical Magazine; or, Flower-Garden Displayed,” this publication is the world's longest continuously published botanical periodical and remains in print today, in association with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Curtis paired precise, hand-coloured plant portraits with plain-language descriptions so that gardeners as well as scientists could identify and grow the species shown. After his death, editorship passed on to later botanists, and the magazine has documented plants from around the world in unbroken publication for well over two centuries.
