Andreas Cellarius engraved this Scenographia Systematis Copernicani for his 1660 atlas Harmonia Macrocosmica, giving the heliocentric universe the same lavish treatment he gave the older Ptolemaic model. Concentric rings carry the planets, Earth included, around a central Sun, following the system Nicolaus Copernicus proposed in his 1543 treatise De revolutionibus orbium coelestium. Though still contested in Cellarius's own century, the Copernican model is staged here with total confidence, framed by clouds, cherubs, and a seated portrait of Copernicus with his instruments.
