The Story in the Margin
This woodblock print, The Derelict, or the Lost Boat, is the work of the American artist and teacher Arthur Wesley Dow, who studied the prints of Hokusai and Hiroshige and adapted their flattened space and economical line to his own American subjects. Rather than settle on one fixed image, Dow experimented with inking the same block in different colour combinations, so that impressions of this abandoned rowboat exist in varied palettes, each one nearly unique. The print is a landmark of Japonisme, the Western fascination with Japanese design that reshaped American and European art around 1900.
