The Ptolemaic System (3) — Antique Celestial Print

Andreas Cellarius engraved this scene, Scenographia Systematis Mundani Ptolemaici, for his 1660 atlas Harmonia Macrocosmica, and it remains one of the most recognizable images the book produced. At its center sits a motionless Earth, ringed by the paths of the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, all held within a band of zodiac constellations, exactly as Ptolemy had described in his 2nd-century treatise the Almagest. Cellarius surrounds the diagram with allegorical astronomers at work, a reminder that this was once considered cutting-edge science.
