Egyptian temple gateways, known as pylons, were the towering sloped entrances marking the boundary between the everyday world and a temple's sacred precinct. Carved with reliefs of pharaohs smiting enemies and honoring the gods, they framed processional routes at sites such as Karnak, Luxor, and Edfu. Most surviving pylons date from the New Kingdom through the Ptolemaic era, roughly 1550 to 30 BC, and remain among the most iconic images of ancient Egyptian architecture.
