A Group of Auriculas — Antique Botanical Print

Primula auricula grows wild on limestone cliffs and rocky outcrops across the Alps and neighboring central European mountain ranges, its rosette leaves often dusted with a fine, silvery powder called farina. Carried to England by Flemish and Huguenot weavers fleeing religious persecution from the late 1500s onward, it became one of the great florists' flowers, bred by generations of amateur growers, especially in weaving and mining communities, for increasingly elaborate color patterns. Prize specimens were traditionally displayed in tiered wooden auricula theatres, shaded stages built to show off the blooms while protecting their delicate powdery coating from rain.
