He-He Er Xian, the Two Immortals of Harmony and Unity, are a beloved pair of Chinese Taoist deities invoked for happy marriages and family concord. Legend traces them to two Tang-dynasty monks, Hanshan and Shide, whose close friendship at Guoqing Monastery later saw them elevated to divine status; they are traditionally shown as smiling boys, one holding a lotus flower (a pun on 'harmony') and the other a round box (a pun on 'union'). Prints and figures of the pair were popular wedding gifts and household images, especially from the Qing dynasty onward.
