The Story in the Margin
This engraving, after a design by Giulio Romano, was made by Giovanni Battista Scultori in 1538 and shows a battle fought simultaneously on land and sea, usually identified with the naval clash of Trojans and Greeks described in Book 14 of Homer's Iliad. Scultori, working in Romano's Mantuan circle, transformed the ships' prows into rearing sea-horses, blending naturalistic battle with mythological ornament. At over 40 centimetres wide, it was among the more ambitious mythological engravings of the Italian Renaissance.
