Tsukudajima from Eitai Bridge — Antique Architectural Print

This is a scene from Utagawa Hiroshige's "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo," a series of woodblock prints made in the final years of his life and published beginning in 1856. The view looks from a piling of the Eitai Bridge across the mouth of the Sumida River toward the small island of Tsukudajima, where fishing boats caught the delicate whitebait once reserved for the shogun's table. Hiroshige rendered the scene as a rare starlit night view, one of the most quietly atmospheric images in the series.
