The tulip (Tulipa) originated in the mountains of Central Asia and was first cultivated in Persia before becoming a beloved symbol of the Ottoman Empire, where Sultan Ahmed III's early 18th-century reign is still remembered as the "Tulip Era." Dutch botanist Carolus Clusius planted some of the first bulbs in Leiden in 1594, and within decades the flower's flamelike, "broken" color patterns had triggered tulip mania, a speculative bulb-trading frenzy of the 1630s often cited as history's first financial bubble. That astonishing range of form and color has made the tulip a perennial favorite of botanical illustrators ever since.
