Urania, Muse of Astronomy, stands in an imagined hilly landscape holding a celestial globe in one hand and a compass in the other, the instruments of her art. One of the nine Muses, daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the Titaness of memory, she belonged to Apollo's circle of the arts and personifies the human study of the heavens that the series' later planetary cards depict directly. This plate is part of the 50-engraving 'Tarocchi' series, produced in northern Italy around 1465 as an encyclopedic set ranging from social rank to the Muses, the Liberal Arts, the Virtues, and the celestial spheres — never an actual tarot or playing-card deck. Though long known by Andrea Mantegna's name, modern scholars doubt his involvement, and the engraver behind the series remains unidentified.
