Venus, Mantegna Tarocchi — Antique Celestial Print

In this engraving from the so-called Tarocchi cards of Mantegna, Venus rises from a bathing pool attended by a blindfolded Cupid and the three Graces, her emblems of seashell, myrtle, and doves overhead marking her as goddess of love and beauty. She holds the third of the seven planetary spheres that close the series' cosmological climb, ascending from Moon to Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The full 50-plate E-series, engraved in northern Italy around 1465, moves from human society through the Muses, the Liberal Arts, and the Virtues before it reaches the heavens; despite its long association with Andrea Mantegna's name, most scholars now doubt he had any hand in it, and the true engraver remains unknown.
