The Charge is another plate from George Bellows' 1918 War Series, the American painter's twelve-print response to the First World War's reported atrocities. Rather than depict heroic combat, Bellows used the cavalry charge as a study in chaos and momentum, rendered with the same muscular, sweeping line he brought to his boxing pictures. Reproduced in Collier's magazine the year it was made, the image carried the war's violence to an American public still largely removed from the fighting.
