The Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai is one of South India's grandest temple complexes, its precinct ringed by fourteen gopurams, or gateway towers, covered in thousands of painted sculptures of Hindu deities and mythological figures. The complex grew over centuries, from its oldest masonry under the Pandya king Kulasekaran I around 1190–1216 to the great outer towers added by the Madurai Nayaks in the 16th and 17th centuries, with the tallest rising some 170 feet. The western gateway is one of these soaring towers, marking a formal entrance into the goddess Meenakshi's sacred city within a city.
