Winslow Homer painted this rugged seascape in 1893, a decade after settling into near isolation at Prout's Neck, Maine, where the pounding surf and rocky shoreline became his primary subject. Stripped of any human presence, the composition uses sharp diagonals and vigorous brushwork to convey the raw power of the Maine coast. The work entered the Art Institute of Chicago's collection in 1931, a gift from the Chicago collector Arthur Jerome Eddy.

The listing photos are flattering without being dishonest. I wanted something by Homer and settled for a middling copy of Coast of Maine. The reproduction is clean in the middle and softer toward the edges. I will probably keep it and I might not.
