Firefly-catching, or hotarugari, was one of the great pleasures of an Edo summer evening, drawing women and children to riverbanks after dark with paper lanterns, nets, and small cages to hold their catch. Ukiyo-e artists from Utamaro onward made the pastime one of their favorite subjects, using the darkness and pinpoint glow of fireflies to stage intimate, atmospheric scenes of women at leisure by the water. This print continues that tradition, catching its subjects in the brief, cool pleasure of a midsummer night's hunt.
