In "Yokkaichi: Mie River," from his 1833–34 series Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, Hiroshige passed over the town's famous monthly market to depict instead a gust of wind tearing through the marshes along the Mie River — a traveler's hat blown loose and chased across the reeds. The scene's dynamic sense of weather and movement is typical of the imaginative liberties Hiroshige took throughout the series to heighten its visual drama.
