This 'chef-de-pièce' — a French term for a large central medallion woven for the focal point of a length of furnishing fabric — was made in the style of the eighteenth-century designer Jean-Baptiste Pillement, whose fanciful chinoiserie compositions of pagodas, foliage, and figures were reproduced for decades after his death. The Art Institute of Chicago dates its example to 1850–75, showing how enduring Pillement's chinoiserie vocabulary remained in French textile design well into the nineteenth century. Fabrics like this centered a room's decorative scheme, anchoring a suite of matching wall and furniture coverings.
