Designed by Jean-Démosthene Dugourc for the Lyon silk manufactory of Camille Pernon around 1799, this pattern belongs to a series Dugourc called the 'Verdures of the Vatican,' inspired by the antique-derived grotesque ornament Raphael painted in the Vatican Loggie. 'The Pheasants' was created as part of an elaborate silk wall covering for the Casita del Labrador, a royal retreat near Madrid built for the Spanish crown. Both the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cleveland Museum of Art preserve examples of this refined Neoclassical silk design.

Jacquard-woven both sides in soft, durable yarn; insert included.
