Chinoiserie in Pen and Ink II Pillow

This pen-and-ink drawing belongs to the European chinoiserie design tradition, in which eighteenth-century artists sketched fanciful 'Chinese' scenes and ornament as source material for textiles, wallpaper, and decorative arts. Designers such as Jean-Baptiste Pillement produced enormous numbers of such drawings, prized for their lively, whimsical line work as much as for their practical use in the decorative arts trade. Institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago preserve significant holdings of chinoiserie works on paper alongside the fabrics and wallpapers they helped inspire.
