Birds on Red Plum Pillow

Painted in 1892 by Ren Yi, this hanging scroll shows six pairs of sparrows gathered among the branches of a weathered plum tree beside a moss-covered boulder. The delicate five-petaled plum blossom, among the first flowers to open each year, is a traditional symbol of both the arrival of spring and quiet endurance through hardship. The painting is held in the Art Institute of Chicago's collection.
