Painted in 1697 by Zhu Da, also known as Bada Shanren, a Ming-dynasty prince turned monk-painter celebrated for his eccentric, deeply personal brushwork, this piece pairs waterfowl with the lotus, a flower long associated in Chinese art with Buddhist purity rising untouched from muddy water. Zhu Da's spare, expressive style, developed after the fall of the Ming dynasty, influenced generations of later Chinese painters. The work is held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Jacquard-woven both sides in soft, durable yarn; insert included.
