Painted in 1885 by Ren Yi, this work pairs a mynah bird, prized in Chinese culture for its ability to mimic human speech, with blossoming lotus. Ren Yi's inscription notes the painting was a gift to a friend, and its style consciously pays tribute to the seventeenth-century painter Zhu Da, whom Ren Yi admired. The painting belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago's collection.
