This work, dated 1694 and attributed to the Qing-dynasty painter Shen Yongling, pairs a squirrel with a heavy cluster of grapes, a combination traditionally read in Chinese painting as a wish for abundant descendants, since both squirrels and grapevines produce prolifically. It reflects the meticulous, naturalistic style of Qing-dynasty bird-and-flower and animal painting. The work is held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Jacquard-woven both sides in soft, durable yarn; insert included.
