This painting, by an unidentified Chinese painter, shows geese taking flight over rushes above bare autumn treetops, combining the geese with mandarin ducks, lotus, and bamboo in the foreground — a traditional Song-dynasty bird-and-flower grouping. Touches of blue-green color on the rocks deliberately echo the older, archaizing palette of Tang-dynasty painting. The work is held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
