Painted in 1893 by Xugu, a Qing-dynasty monk-painter known for his light, distinctive brushwork, this work depicts a small gathering of black birds rendered with the spare, calligraphic touch that made Xugu one of the most original bird-and-flower painters of his generation. The painting is held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
