Painted by Ren Yi, the best-known painter in Shanghai by 1875, this hanging scroll pairs roosters with blossoming apricot branches, combining two popular auspicious motifs of Chinese bird-and-flower painting. The work is rendered in Ren Yi's mature style of loose brushwork and layered ink washes. It is held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
