Painted on the winter solstice of 1717 by the Yangzhou artist Yuan Jiang, this work shows an aristocratic villa and its garden of sweeping trees and eroded rocks beneath misty, distant mountains, its figures gathered to view plum blossoms over warm wine. Yuan Jiang was celebrated for jiehua, or 'ruled-line painting,' a meticulous architectural technique using drafting tools alongside the brush to render buildings with precise, almost theatrical grandeur. Panoramic yet intimate images like this one were typically commissioned by wealthy patrons of late imperial China to display in the reception halls of their private mansions.
Jacquard-woven both sides in soft, durable yarn; insert included.
