This album leaf is a formal portrait of an unidentified Chinese gentleman, painted in ink and colors on silk sometime between the Yuan and Ming dynasties. Portraits of this kind, distinct from more informal literati sketches, followed conventions of frontal or three-quarter posture and rich, precise costume detail intended to convey a sitter's status and moral bearing rather than capture a passing likeness. The Art Institute of Chicago holds an example of this type of portraiture, a gift of the collector Robert Allerton.
