Dated to 1347, this monochrome hanging scroll depicts quails and sparrows in an autumn setting, translated from the customarily colorful academic bird-and-flower tradition into plain ink alone. Its meticulous rendering of the birds echoes the naturalistic standards of the Song-dynasty Imperial Painting Academy even as it experiments with a more restrained palette. The painting is held in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
