Painted by the Ming-dynasty painter Lu Zhi (1496–1576) of Suzhou, this work shows a bird perched on a flowering branch, accompanied by an inscribed poem in Lu Zhi's own hand. A student of the scholar-painters Wen Zhengming and Zhu Yunming, Lu Zhi painted flowers in the meticulous manner associated with the earlier masters Xu Xi and Huang Quan. The painting is held in the Art Institute of Chicago's collection.
