Painted in 1638 by Chen Hongshou for his aunt's sixtieth birthday, this hanging scroll depicts Lady Xuanwen, an honorific title meaning 'Lady of Literary Propagation,' instructing young scholars in the Confucian Rites of Zhou. The historical figure behind the legend was a woman of the Former Qin dynasty renowned as an expert in ritual texts, here shown at a venerable age surrounded by ancient bronze vessels that lend the scene an air of scholarly antiquity. Chen Hongshou's fine, controlled 'iron-wire' brushwork and brilliant mineral-pigment coloring reflect his deliberately archaic personal style.
Jacquard-woven both sides in soft, durable yarn; insert included.
