This painting depicts the popular Chinese theme of 'one hundred children at play,' known as baizitu, in which countless young boys are shown absorbed in games across a garden setting. The subject, which crystallized as a distinct genre from the early Ming dynasty onward, expressed a Confucian family's hope for abundant descendants to continue ancestral rites, with 'one hundred' meant more as 'innumerable' than as a literal count. Artists took evident pride in populating these scenes with children individually engaged in wrestling, hide-and-seek, and other lively pursuits, often alongside the loftier Four Accomplishments of music, chess, calligraphy, and painting.
