Xu Jingyang Moving His Family Pillow

Xu Jingyang was a devoted fourth-century Confucian official whom legend transformed into a Daoist immortal, said to have ascended to paradise bringing his entire household — family, chickens, and dogs alike — along with him. This hanging scroll, painted in 1644 by the late-Ming artist Cui Zizhong, renders the legend in a deliberately archaic style, using blue-and-green color and emphatic outlines drawn from painting traditions that predated the Song dynasty. The flickering, luminous treatment of rocks and trees, however, is distinctly Cui Zizhong's own, blending historical reference with his individual technique.
