Painted by Liu Jie, a Ming-dynasty court painter known for his fish paintings, this work depicts a leaping carp rendered in fine ink outlines and graded washes. In Chinese legend, a carp that leaps through the 'Dragon Gate' transforms into a dragon, a story long used as a metaphor for a scholar succeeding in the imperial civil service examinations. The painting is held in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
