This album leaf comes from Min Zhen's 1788 'Album of Miscellaneous Subjects,' a set of twelve leaves the eccentric Qing-dynasty painter made for his friend Dailili Shanren in exchange for a scholar's stone. Min Zhen renders the banana plant from an unconventional low viewpoint, a motif long associated in Chinese painting with the literati world and, more loosely, with Buddhist ideas of impermanence given the plant's broad, easily torn leaves. Orphaned young and trained by the writer and imperial porcelain-workshop superintendent Tang Yin, Min Zhen was known for the versatility he brought to this late album. It is held in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Jacquard-woven both sides in soft, durable yarn; insert included.
