Willow and Magpie is attributed to the Chan Buddhist monk-painter Fachang, known as Muqi, who was active in Hangzhou during the thirteenth century and became one of the most influential ink painters of the Southern Song dynasty. Working in a loose, atmospheric ink technique, Muqi combined close observation of the magpie's form with soft, blurred strokes suggesting mist and rain settling over the willow branches. His spontaneous, understated style, closely tied to Chan Buddhist practice, had a lasting influence on later Chinese and Japanese ink painting. The hanging scroll is held in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Jacquard-woven both sides in soft, durable yarn; insert included.
