Su Dongpo Pillow

Su Dongpo (1037–1101), also known as Su Shi, was one of China's most celebrated poets, calligraphers, and statesmen, so widely admired that later painters frequently portrayed him as a model of literati refinement. This portrait, painted by the Qing dynasty artist Min Zhen in 1788, likely uses Su Dongpo as its model, showing a gentleman holding an incense burner rather than the inkstone more commonly associated with the poet. Min Zhen's inscription places the work precisely on the sixth day of the sixth lunar month of that year, a personal record of tribute to one of China's literary giants.
