This painting by Gu Jianlong depicts Yang Guifei, the celebrated consort of the Tang dynasty emperor Xuanzong, stepping from her bath in a robe of sheer red gauze as an attendant offers her a bowl of soup. Yang Guifei's beauty and her emperor's devotion to her became one of the most retold romantic tragedies in Chinese literature and art, her story ending in her forced death during a military rebellion. Gu Jianlong, active in the 1600s, was known for refined, sensuous figure paintings of exactly this kind, rendered in ink, color, and gold on silk.
