Zhong Kui is China's great vanquisher of demons, a folk deity believed to protect households from evil spirits, especially around New Year's Day and the Double Fifth Festival, when his image was displayed to ward off disease and misfortune. This painting, by the eighteenth-century painter and self-declared expert on the supernatural Luo Ping, shows Zhong Kui carried aloft by a retinue of ghosts, a puckish twist on his usual role as their scourge. Luo Ping was celebrated for his idiosyncratic, atmospheric depictions of ghosts and spirits, most famously in his handscroll known as the Ghost Amusement Scroll.
