Zhongli Quan Crossing the Ocean Pillow

Zhongli Quan, shown here as a robe-fluttering, big-bellied scholar-immortal striding across roaring waves, is one of the Eight Immortals of Daoist legend, each of whom crossed the sea using only their own individual magic rather than a boat. Although unsigned, this painting's style supports an attribution to the Ming dynasty painter Zhao Qi and may once have belonged to a set depicting the full group of Eight Immortals. The subject illustrates the well-known Chinese proverb that when the Eight Immortals cross the sea, each reveals their own particular power.
