Bamboo Pavilion Tiger Hill Tapestry Blanket

Painted after 1490 by Shen Zhou, founder of Suzhou's Wu School of painting, this work belongs to his celebrated album Twelve Views of Tiger Hill, Suzhou, which traces an imagined visit to a scenic site just outside the artist's home city. Rejecting an official career for the life of a retired scholar, Shen Zhou depicted Tiger Hill's landmarks in a suite of mostly monochrome scenes touched with subtle color, of which this Bamboo Pavilion view is one. The album captures both the specific topography of Tiger Hill and the broader literati ideal of unhurried travel through a beloved landscape.
