This is one of Shen Zhou's Twelve Views of Tiger Hill, Suzhou, a series painted by the founder of the Wu School depicting a beloved scenic site just outside his native city. Shen Zhou, who turned down an official career to live as a retired scholar-painter supported by family wealth, structured the album as an imagined journey from arriving at the mountain's foot by boat up to the Cloudy Cliff Monastery at its summit. This particular view, The Pine Retreat, captures a secluded shelter among Tiger Hill's pines, part of the leisured, contemplative travel experience the series as a whole evokes.
