Bamboo bent gracefully in the wind is among the most celebrated subjects in Chinese ink painting, exemplified by works such as the 1338 hanging scroll by the monk-painter Xuechuang, also known as Puming, who led Yunyan Temple on Tiger Hill near Suzhou. Because bamboo bends without breaking, it became a lasting metaphor in literati and Chan Buddhist circles for withstanding worldly pressure without losing one's integrity. This painting continues that tradition, using controlled, expressive brushwork to capture a single stalk caught in a passing breeze.
