This painting illustrates the celebrated fable 'Peach Blossom Spring,' written by the poet-recluse Tao Yuanming in 421 CE, in which a fisherman stumbles upon a hidden valley whose inhabitants had fled political turmoil centuries earlier and lived on in blissful isolation, unaware of the outside world. Blossoming peach trees, long associated with immortality and paradise in Chinese thought, conceal the entrance to this secluded utopia. The tale became one of the most enduringly popular subjects in Chinese painting, especially favored during periods of political upheaval as an image of escape and simple, harmonious living.
